Adams State junior Stephanie Cotter, an Irish standout who has won five NCAA Division 2 titles along with contributing to both cross country and indoor track and field championship teams in 2019 for the Grizzlies, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss being the only athlete in any event to repeat as champion at the Division 2 indoor final when she prevailed again in the mile March 13 at the CrossPlex in Birmingham, Ala. Cotter also examines her streak of five consecutive individual or relay races capturing titles at Division 2 championship meets, including the mile and the distance medley relay at the 2019 indoor final, the 1,500 meters at the 2019 outdoor final and the 6-kilometer race at the 2019 cross country final. She emphasizes her mile victory in 4:51.72 as being the most significant of all the individual victories at nationals, considering how few times she had raced during indoor season and coming back from time away from training during the fall to refocus and rediscover her passion for the sport. Cotter expresses gratitude for her opportunity to learn more about sophomore teammate Brianna Robles during their trip to Birmingham, and how impressive it was to watch her earn All-America honors in the 5,000, following a seventh-place finish, despite a miscalculation in the laps during the race. She shares how impressive distance running has been in Division 2 during the indoor season and her anticipation for all of the top men's and women's athletes having the opportunity to square off during the spring outdoor schedule, which culminates May 27-29 in Allendale, Mich. Cotter analyzes the challenge for Adams State to capture the first women's outdoor team title in program history and the quest to knock off reigning indoor winner Grand Valley State at the Lakers' home venue. She explains her interest in nature and climbing, and having the opportunity to scale more than half of the 14ers in Colorado, the peaks that summit at more than 14,000 feet. Cotter also confirms her decision to transfer to Northern Arizona following the outdoor season and her graduation from Adams State, and completing her remaining eligibility for the Lumberjacks as a graduate student-athlete.
