CSU Pueblo All-Americans Yasmine Hernandez and Hailey Streff, members of fourth-place and runner-up distance medley relay lineups in their past two appearances at the NCAA Division 2 Indoor Championships, join DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss the final indoor competition of their collegiate careers March 11-12 at the Division 2 indoor meet at the Robert W. Plaster Center in Pittsburg, Kansas. They reminisce about teaming in 2019 with Tatianna Clanton and Nicole Bouma on a DMR quartet that placed fourth in 11:34.57 at Pittsburg State in their first experience at an NCAA final. Both competitors also look back on their runner-up performance last year at the CrossPlex in Birmingham, Ala., teaming with Lauren Fairchild and Margot Thomas to clock 11:33.55. And they examine their potential this season with freshmen Taylor Holland and Helen Braybrook joining them on the DMR lineup. Hernandez reflects on their experience competing at Pittsburg State, including a dress rehearsal Feb. 11-12 at the Gorilla Classic, and how the Thunderwolves favor racing on the 300-meter flat track at the arena. Streff analyzes the benefits of competing closer to sea level, especially after racing Feb. 24-26 at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Indoor Championships at 7,700 feet elevation at Western Colorado. They both explain how the strength of the RMAC has been valuable in their preparation for national meets in cross country, indoor and outdoor track, and how much respect they have for the depth demonstrated by Adams State, along with the elite distance athletes from Colorado School of Mines, UC-Colorado Springs and Western Colorado. Streff speaks about the opportunities to compete against her sister Cami, a redshirt sophomore at Augustana (South Dakota), in both the DMR and 800 meters at the Division 2 indoor meet after first squaring off in the DMR last year, and how supportive her family has been for both siblings throughout their careers. They evaluate the Thunderwolves' potential to contend for a podium finish after placing sixth at last year's NCAA indoor final with only five female athletes, and explain how meaningful it would be to capture a national title in the DMR or the 800, and the challenges they face competing against New Zealand standout and Simon Fraser senior Alison Andrews-Paul, a Baylor transfer. Both individuals also share how they have been able to balance challenging academic schedules with training, travel and competition throughout their careers, and their pride in helping elevate the national profile of the CSU Pueblo program.
