Pittsburg State senior All-American Trace Mosby, the No. 5 pentathlon competitor in NCAA Division 2 indoor history at 4,122 points, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing at home March 11-12 at the Robert W. Plaster Center in Pittsburg, Kansas, for the Division 2 indoor championship meet. Mosby was NCAA runner-up in the pentathlon last year with 3,966 points and is looking to become the first Pittsburg State female athlete to win the multi-event title since Emilyn Dearman in 2017. Dearman holds the program record and ranks No. 3 in division indoor history at 4,146 points. Mosby and reigning Division 2 indoor pentathlon champion Cheyenne Williamson, who prevailed last year with 4,113 points, are both pursuing the division all-time mark of 4,193 points achieved in 2012 by Lindsay Lettow of Central Missouri. Mosby examines her opportunities to also compete in the 60-meter hurdles and the 4x400-meter relay, and the challenges of the pentathlon being scheduled for the second day of the meet, in addition to the two other finals. She reflects on competing in five races and the long jump final Feb. 26-27 at the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association final, and how that dress rehearsal was beneficial in preparing for the Division 2 indoor championship meet. Mosby shares her excitement for freshmen Blakelee Winn, who scored 3,850 points at the conference meet to qualify for the NCAA final, to be competing in the pentathlon as well, and for Pittsburg State to be the only program with two female entries in the combined events. She also analyzes the opportunity for Pittsburg State to contend for a team podium finish and potentially place in the top two for the first time in Division 2 indoor championship history, competing against Minnesota State, West Texas A&M, Adams State, Grand Valley State and Azusa Pacific. Mosby indicates this will be her final indoor competition for Pittsburg State ahead of her last spring outdoor season before graduation and expresses gratitude to the coaching staff for helping her develop into one of the top competitors in program and Division 2 history. She also speaks about completing her Master of Business Administration degree with an emphasis in marketing, as well as working in IT consulting, and discusses her post-collegiate plans, along with her potential in the heptathlon during the outdoor schedule after placing sixth at last year's Division 2 final.
